Sveti Stefan, the forbidden paradise

When you type “Montenegro” into the Google Image Search, a photo of the small peninsula of Sveti Stefan pops up right at the top. With its picturesque line of stone buildings broken only by the hundreds of olive trees, lying on a peninsula next to the crystal-clear waters and dreamy beaches, no wonder Sveti Stefan is such a catch! In fact, it is so pretty, it served as a summer residence for the Yugoslavian Queen, Maria, and later  as a meeting point for the rich and famous.

Today, the small peninsula is a five-star resort, part of the international Aman Resorts franchise. Although tourist access is only permitted for guests in the hotel and beach area, one can enjoy a lovely view of it from the E80 road, heading from Budva towards Petrovac.

I have been fortunate enough to see it twice in the past year, but since I’m a budget traveler and can’t exactly afford to stay in five-star hotels, I’ve just seen it from afar. But even so it’s a pretty sight, and if you’re ever in the Budva area, I recommend checking out this unique peninsula. Of course I had to make a self-portrait with this stunning background 🙂

While you’re in the area, you might want to check out Petrovac, a less-crowded alternative to Budva, The picturesque Montenegrin village of Perastand even the Islands of Perast.

  • It’s so beautiful from the shore – I can’t help but wonder if it is a bit of a disappointment when you get onto the island. Either way, I’ll never be able to afford to stay there so who cares? 😀

    • Well, I looked around on the site and everything looks pretty awesome (especially the restaurants and their views of the sea), but let’s hope it IS a disappointment to make ourselves feel a little bit better haha 😀

  • New life goal: stay in that five star hotel! 😀 I’m off to check how much it costs, haha.

    • Good luck with that Vlad :)) the cheapest room is somewhere around 900 in season and 600 off season. Per room, per night.

  • From far away it already looks good ! 🙂 I quite hate these 5* hotel growing everywhere… either they ruin the landscape or prevent people to enjoy it for free 🙂

    • I agree! They should at least make some more affordable restaurants for people to enjoy a great meal and a lovely view.
