The Gorge of Tureni

On the 22nd of March, we had a field trip pinned down with the university to the nearest gorges. We planned the trip in early February, and everyone automatically assumed that because it will be the end of March, we’ll probably be wearing a T-shirt (and max a sweater). Well, guess what, Spring wasn’t as kind this time. I woke up early and as I looked at the window actual sleet was falling from the sky. I started having real doubts about whether or not I would put myself up to half a day of trekking in the awful weather, but I eventually went and I’m happy to say I didn’t regret it at all.

The bus dropped us off in the small village of Tureni in Romanian. The plan was to walk from its gorge to another one nearby , Turda gorge, and the whole trip would last 9 hours or so. Packed with sandwiches, and hot tea (which turned cold in less than an hour), we were ready for the challenge, though I have to admit, we were a bit hesitant. After an hour of walking, we realized that the wind was overpowering us, making it really hard to progress when it was blowing little frozen snowflakes in our faces.

I can’t give enough thanks to my mom who convinced me to take my ski pants and snow-boots with me (without which I think I’m pretty sure I would’ve gotten a serious cold). Although the snow wasn’t resistant enough to remain on the ground, (unlike in the other gorge, where everything was fully dressed in white), I can assure you that those teeny-tiny icy snowflakes did the best they could to demoralize us. (if you look close, you can see the little flakes in the photo below).

I photographed everything on auto mode (it was too cold for me to do manual- plus, I was concentrating on a positive attitude), so as you can see, the camera mostly ignored the little snowflakes and focused on the sights. Not that I’m complaining or anything, but when I got home and started telling the story of our adventure, I don’t think anyone could actually imagine how bad of a weather we actually got, because none of the photos actually reflected that.

Yes, ladies & gentlemen, this is how it kind of looked like. We survived and it was actually one of the best trips I’ve been on (it’s a real triumph for me pushing through such weather & conditions, especially because I rarely ever went trekking-until now! I am going to go as much as I can from now on, because here, in Transylvania, we have beautiful mountains and places to escape to). Be sure to check back in a few days to see our adventure continue to the gorge of Turda, where things will be much whiter than here!

Thanks for reading, have a lovely day! 😀
