Skiathos Town

Skiathos – the westernmost island in the Northern Sporades island group. The capital of the island is Skiathos town, with a population of less than 5000 inhabitants. It has one of the smallest airports of the country but has become very popular due to hosting the “Mamma Mia” filmings.

We came to this island during a one-day boat trip, so we had a very strict timetable we had to respect. We spent about 2 and a half hours in the “capital city”. The tour included a meal (which wasn’t included in the boat trip fee), and the funny thing was that the guide took the tourists to the (probably) most expensive terrace on the island!  Anyways, we decided to look around and see the sights instead.

To be honest, people don’t really come to Skiathos for the town, but for the beaches. So the town doesn’t have that much to offer, but it’s lovely little bays and beautiful scenery. The things I loved the most were the tiny shops with impressive display windows, like the post office’s shop-window:

The other awesome thing about Skiathos (and Greece as I heard from others who traveled to other parts of the country) were the tons of flowers which were the perfect contrast on the white stone walls. Some were pale pink, some neon, but not only the flowers impressed, but the potted plants too.

We decided to climb to the highest point in order to get a better view of the island. The steps were pretty steep but the tower that stands at the peak of Skiathos Town is hard to miss. There are signs that lead you up (very decorative, I might add):

When we finally got to the top, we checked out the tower and went on to see the view. The surroundings did not disappoint!
