UNESCO – Meteoras III: The Formations
As we ascended higher and higher with the bus, the rocks became immense giants which have stood there waiting and watching in silence for thousands and thousands of years, guarding small towns and traveling souls.
“Studies suggest that the pinnacles were formed about 60 million years ago during the Paleogene Period. Weathering and earthquakes then shaped them into their present shape.” –says Wikipedia. I just think that it’s absolutely amazing – and partly unbelievable – how these formations were shaped in such a way that they became unique in our big world.
I have to admit that there wasn’t a monastery that could catch my eye and keep me hooked as these formations… I couldn’t take my eyes off them! Although the photos don’t really emphasize the magic of the place (because of the bad weather conditions and our not-so-apt camera), but the truth is the Meteoras are breathtaking. I’ll leave you with some photos to try and absorb the place, because no words can describe the beauty of the Meteora!
