Petrovac, a less-crowded alternative to Budva

When you choose your next holiday destination, you always have something in mind before you start looking for accommodation sites and ways to get there. Maybe you’d like a partying holiday, or just some beach where you can relax on, sipping cocktails all day and not having a care in the World. If you’re in search for the latter, or maybe you have a family with small kids and need a calm, quiet place away from the crowds, then Petrovac is most definitely for you.

Situated on the coast of the Adriatic between Budva and Bar holiday resorts, Petrovac na Moru is the ideal choice if you want some peaceful days on the beach, but also be close to some of the main sights of the Montenegrin coast. With little stone houses lying next to cobblestone, narrow little streets, you’ll be happy to hear the Petrovac is not only calmer, but accommodations here are also much cheaper.

In the last few years, Budva, Montenegro’s prime summer holiday destination, has been very well-developed, meaning that there are tons of new hotels and hotel chains opening their doors, inviting much more tourists than their beaches can handle. I’ve seen Budva last May and then again about 1 month ago, and was actually horrified of how it changed, but more on Budva on the next post.

On contrast, however, Petrovac has stayed much the same, but not in an underdeveloped, but in a balanced, good way. Its beaches aren’t as crowded as those of Budva, and it kept its small Montenegrin fishing village atmosphere, which I find absolutely lovely.

When someone talks about the town I immediately think about the small islet located right in front of it, with a charming little church on it. Although from the front it looks quite tiny, in reality, the islet is much larger than I initially thought:

I’ve stayed in Petrovac for three days last year. Although the weather wasn’t appropriate for beach time (we were there at the beginning of May), the town served as the best base for checking out nearby sites, such as Budva in the rain, The 7 Must-sees in Kotor Old Town and Skadar Lake, a must-see, all which are within an hour’s drive. Herceg Novi and the infamous Croatian town of Dubrovnik are also close-by, so you can combine your beach holiday with some interesting sightseeing.

What kind of holiday base do you prefer?

Calm and secluded or more crowded ones with a lot of action?

  • I prefer quiet places, I don’t like when it’s too busy, for me, it’s not synonym of holiday 🙂

    • I am also like that, especially at the beach. I like to have beaches all to myself and my travel companions 🙂

  • Looks lovely! Is the accommodation in Petrovac cheaper than in Kotor?

    • I think so! We stayed in a villa/guesthouse and it was minimum comfort but so was the price (it was actually quite nice). I don’t really care much of accommodation when I travel, since I only go there to sleep 🙂
