Budva in the Rain

On the 2nd of May 2014 we visited Budva, one of the prime holiday destination spots on the Adriatic coast of Montenegro. Although I am generally happy and excited that Montenegro is getting a lot of attention lately, I am still hoping it won’t get overcrowded anytime soon – although my hopes might be in vain. This year I’ve yet again passed by Budva and barely recognized it because of the many (MANY!) hotel chains that have been built in the past year. So my advice for Budva would be: GO NOW, before it’s too late to enjoy it!

Unfortunately the only day we had a lot of free time on the organized trip we participated in last year was on the last day in a rainy Budva. What can you do? After three efforts of sightseeing we only got wet three times and ended up spending a few hours in a local cafe. The little we managed to see of the town was mainly inside the Old City Walls, where a local music festival was unveiling unsure because of the rainfall (thus the colorful decor).

In my opinion, the old town part of the city was still pretty impressive even during the rain. Especially when we approached a small little wooden door that lead to a terrace area on the beach!

The beach itself looked lovely and clean. Remember: don’t expect any crystal-clear sand in Montenegro – beaches here contain a lot of small rocks and are a bit red-ish. The view of the Old Town Walls was absolutely lovely, and I definitely would’ve enjoyed a great sunny day here at the beach sipping on some ice-cold cider.

All in all, I thought Budva was lovely, and definitely recommend it as a potential holiday destination, like I said at the beginning of the article – as soon as possible, before the crowds move in! Of course for those who don’t mind sharing the beach with thousands of tourists, the city is open anytime. It is the perfect blend of an active nightlife, lovely beach, pleasant weather and proximity to other Montenegrin attractions.
